Alas, a generation or two of horrible adult catechesis, and "Holy Days of Obligation" are just one "casualty" among many. Participation in the Holy Sacrifice of the Eucharist IS the quintessential moment of human existence - and really should NOT ever even have to be viewed as an "obligation" - and would not be so if adults REALLY knew their faith. As is, spiritual ignorance and it's most tragic "fruit" - spiritual immaturity - is of epidemic proportions. How many would see Mass as an "obligation" if they properly understood the awesome reality of Eucharistic Sacrifice....: Really, and truly being at the "Foot of the Cross" on Calvary with the Blessed Mother, and St. John the Beloved, offering one's own whole life as a sacrifice with Jesus Himself, in the Holy Spirit, to God the Father. Other, less splendid realities - Deification namely one - are similarly unknown, much to the horrific loss of the soul. The call to Sainthood is perhaps the most tragic "loss" of them all.
