This post is in part a reaction to news of a Catholic University accepting, really "condoning" a pro-homosexual movement or group on campus. This is reported by "The Cardinal Newman Society" (cardinalnewmansociety.org) actually does some pretty good work. Just perhaps a tiny bit of context for this.
Since about the mid to late 1960's theology in Catholic Colleges has been horribly suspect way too often. Naturally, not every theology program or university has "fallen victim to this" - but one might say that even "one is one too many". Frankly, I would like agree with this, but my own assessment on the matter is not important, nor the point of this writing. The greater issue at hand is the seemingly "perennial conflict", as one might see it, to pit the Catholic Church as the villian, oppressor, enemy, whatever, of legitimate and valuable academic pursuits. The battle cry of "academic freedom" has been erroneously placed as being against "Truth" a.k.a. "Orthodoxy". This is actually a bit a ironic as the very Creator or "maker" if you will of all Natural Truth, is the very same as that of Divine Revelation, also known as "Supernatural Revelation." The same "entity" (if one refers to the Blessed Trinity in such crass terms), indeed the same Deity, is responsible for both. Alas, the notion that being faithful to the proclamations of the Magesterium somehow "impinge" or "interfere" with the authentic pursuit of truth, be this supernatural or natural, is really quite absurd. Truth simply cannot contradict truth, and whether this be "natural" or "supernatural" - the same source is responsible for both. Perhaps further elaboration "will be had" later, but for now, this shall suffice. Any Catholic University officially recognizing or espousing movements, actions, etc., that contradict Church Teaching is out of line in doing so, and potentially a source of scandal. Until "the Masses" or the "every day Catholic, as it were, becomes well-informed of Catholic Teaching, what really is the teaching of Jesus Christ, confusion will be a problem when noted or "reputable" Catholic institutions promote and/or tolerate realities contrary to the very mission of the Catholic Church - Glorifying God the Father, and pursuing the salvation of every soul.
More on all this perhaps another time.....
