It's always a good sign when the Mother University of the US Bishops Conference - Catholic University of America - promotes real Orthodoxy. What a wonderful thing!
CUA Philosophy Prof: “You can’t pick and choose in Catholic moral teaching.”
Rist, the author of several books on morality including What is Truth? From the Academy to the Vatican, also said that in order for Catholicism to flourish the clergy “have got to be visible, they have to be unpopular in many cases. If they don’t, they’ll be failing their job.”
But that’s not necessarily a terrible thing because young people, who are idealistic, are drawn to morally brave behavior, he said. Priests set a good example for the laity by defending their faith. His advice to Christians interested in evangelization is:
Don’t pull your punches…You’ve got to say to people out there that Christianity offers you something radically different. Better. More defensible intellectually and more satisfying morally. If you do that then you’ll arouse interest particularly among young people. Young people are still idealistic. They’re always idealistic when they’re young so there’s an opportunity to appeal to idealism. And idealism often does demand sacrifices and they’re prepared to make it.
If you offer just the same boring old secular stuff you’ll go nowhere. It’ll go nowhere at all.
