"Imitation of Christ" excerpt

‎'The Imitation of Christ

A work of spiritual devotion, also sometimes called the "Following of Christ". Its purpose is to instruct the soul in Christian perfection with Christ as the Divine Model, and is divided into four parts or books:

Useful admonitions for a spiritual life,

Admonitions concerning spiritual things;

Of interior consolation;

Of the Blessed Sacrament.

With the exception of the Bible , it is perhaps the most widely read spiritual book in the world. It was first published anonymously in 1418 A.D. Its authorship has been disputed, being attributed to various spiritual writers: St. Bernard, St. Bonaventure , Innocent III, Henry of Kalkar, John à Kempis, Walter Hilton, Jean Charlier de Gerson, and Giovanni Gersen. The claim of Thomas à Kempis has been completely vindicated in recent years.
Father Thomas à Kempis was a monk of The Canons Regular of Mount St. Agnes at Windesheim in Germany, who was ordained a priest in 1413. He was born at Kempen in the Diocese of Cologne, in 1380 and is described as "a man of middle height, dark complexion and vivid coloring, with a broad forehead and piercing eyes; kind and affable towards all, especially the sorrowful and the afflicted; constantly engaged in his favorite occupations of reading, writing, or prayer; in time of recreation for the most part silent and recollected, finding it difficult even to express an opinion on matters of mundane interest, but pouring out a ready torrent of eloquence when the conversation turned on God or the concerns of the soul. At such times often he would excuse himself, "My brethren", he would say, "I must go: Someone is waiting to converse with me in my cell.".
Anyone looking to increase their spirituality and to get closer to Jesus would be well advised to study and read this great book, which is available for free online. It is a great idea to purchase a copy of this book also, to take with you to Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.
